Some years at Rainbow Acres are measured in projects finished or seasons passed. 2025 will be remembered by a different number: eleven. Eleven new Ranchers joined our community this year. As our President and CEO, Paul Higgins, wrote in our 2025 Annual Report, that’s “more than in any year I can recall.” Behind that figure are eleven families who spent months, sometimes years, searching for a place where their adult son or daughter could truly belong. And behind it is a question we take seriously every time someone new arrives. How do you welcome a person so well that, before long, no one thinks of them as new at all?
A Welcome Without a Ceremony
That’s the part of an arrival that rarely makes it into a brochure. A move to Rainbow Acres is a big one, often the first time a young adult has lived away from the family home. The first days can feel like standing at the edge of a room where everyone else already knows the rhythm. Our answer to that isn’t a grand ceremony. It’s the ordinary, repeated work of folding someone into the life of the Ranch until the rhythm becomes theirs too.
Belonging, One Ordinary Day at a Time
It begins with the residences. A Rancher doesn’t arrive into an institution. They arrive into a home, with housemates who have walked this same path and staff who learn their preferences, their humor, and their history. It continues in the classes at Rainbow Academy, where a new Rancher might discover horticulture in the greenhouse, animal science out among the miniature burros and goats, or a fine-arts studio where their work goes up on the wall beside everyone else’s. This fall, with our horseback riding program back and running, some of them found themselves in the saddle for the first time. Purpose has a way of accelerating belonging. When a person has a job to do, a class they look forward to, and a friend saving them a seat, they stop being the newcomer and start being simply themselves, a member of the community.
Integration Is the Whole Philosophy
We don’t run a separate track for people still finding their footing. New Ranchers are woven into the same worship, the same meals, the same celebrations, and the same daily routines as those who have been here for decades. That mix is deliberate. Long-time Ranchers become mentors without being asked to, and newer ones bring energy and fresh questions that keep the community from growing set in its ways. The result is a place where the person who arrived this spring and the person who arrived twenty years ago are, in every way that matters, equals.
Growing Well, Not Just Growing
Growth like this also asks something of us. Welcoming eleven new Ranchers isn’t only a story of doors opening. It’s a reminder that a community is only as strong as the care it can sustain. Each new arrival raised the same question for our staff and our board. How do we do this well, not just for the eleven, but for all seventy-nine Ranchers who call this place home? That question has shaped a year focused on strengthening the foundation beneath the community: steadier facilities, well-supported staff, and the kind of stability that lets us make a promise and keep it for the long haul. New Ranchers didn’t stretch us thin. They sharpened our commitment to getting the fundamentals right, so that the welcome we offer is one we can honor for a lifetime.
